Keep track of everything – with the OBO selection guide for earthing systems

The previous DIN 18014 dealt exclusively with foundation earth electrodes. The new version of the standard is now more general, also covering the planning, set-up and documentation of earthing systems for buildings with a focus on their technical construction. This standard was expanded to respond to the continuous development of construction technology and, with it, the growing requirements placed on earthing systems. In practice, this means that the new standard now offers the option to use earth rods and other earthing measures instead of foundation earth electrodes for several building types (e.g. standard individual residential buildings with a floor area up to 400 m²).

What’s also new is that the standard was conceptualised for different requirements. It can now be applied both for new buildings and for retrofits to existing buildings. The updated DIN 18014 entered into force in June 2023 and is now to be applied for new earthing systems as well as modifications to existing systems. For systems already in the planning or construction phase, a transition period applies until 01 June 2024  Our tip for planners, craftspeople and installers is to apply the new DIN standard now to make sure you’re on the safe side.
