Project description

The construction work for the new main building of the European Central Bank Frankfurt began in 2010. The spectacular architecture combines two new tower blocks with the building of the former Frankfurt central market hall. OBO Bettermann equipped the major building with comprehensive systems for the electrotechnical infrastructure.

The team at OBO Projekt- und Systemtechnik assumed the complete coordination – from comprehensive material deliveries, through construction site logistics and agreement with customers and subcontractors, up to controlling.

February 2010 saw the beginning of the construction work on the ensemble of buildings, which consists of three elements: A 165-metre-high southern tower with 43 storeys and a 185-metre-high northern tower with 45 storeys, which, together with an aerial on the northern tower, reaches a total height of 201 metres. As a third element, the old central market hall from 1928 was extended according to the "building-in-a-building principle". Amongst other things, the 250-metre-long and 30-metre-high building contains the conference and meeting area, as well as the visitor and press centre. An entrance structure connects the towers and the hall.

Why did the customer choose OBO products?

The complex of buildings places major demands on the functionality of the electrical infrastructure. OBO systems provide the necessary supplies of power and data. More than 50,000 metres of cable trays, almost 16,000 metres of mesh cable trays , around 8,000 metres of rising sections and 660 metres of wide span cable ladders were installed.

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

The logistical challenges included the various material orders and commissions, which were made separately according to individual mounting areas and customers.

The order, completed at the end of 2014, had a volume of almost 3.3 billion euros. In the challenging project, OBO Bettermann again more than proved its ability to equip major buildings in a professional manner.
