Project description

It will be one of the most modern hard coal power stations in the world. In Hamm-Uentrop, RWE Power AG is expanding the existing power plant to include Blocks D and E. The two blocks replace the 160-megawatt blocks, which were commissioned in the early 1960s. The total output of the two new hard coal blocks will be ten times higher – 1,600 megawatts. The plant will also be considerably more efficient than its predecessor. It requires 20 per cent less hard coal to generate the same amount of power.

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

Countless power cables have to be run through the blocks for the plant to work perfectly. For this reason, OBO is currently mounting cable support systems in Block E, in the auxiliary systems and in the switching systems buildings for Blocks E and D. Approx. 65,000 metres of of cable ladder systems and 7,000 metres of rising section systems are planned, which OBO will deliver to Hamm-Uentrop. And it could be even more – the call for tender to equip the boiler systems is still underway.

In total, the new plant has an investment volume of two million euros. Besides RWE Power, 23 municipal partners are involved, who, thanks to the cooperation, have their own generation capacities. Like the existing power station, the new blocks will be fuelled with hard coal and petroleum coke. Petroleum coke is a carbon-rich residue of the mineral oil industry, whose high calorific value has been exploited by power stations for decades.
